Day 1 Bags is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality bags and essential items to youth in foster care. We replace trash bags with durable luggage, offering dignity and support during life transitions.
Who do you serve?
We support youth in foster care across the United States—whether they’re transitioning between placements, attending court, graduating high school, or aging out of care.
What makes your bags different?
Our bags are built to last and backed by a lifetime warranty. We offer high-quality duffels, backpacks, lunch bags, and vital document bags—never trash bags or low-cost substitutes.
What is the “Adopt a Senior from Foster Care” campaign?
Each year, we celebrate foster youth graduating from high school by gifting them handmade quilts and meaningful items to honor their accomplishments.
Do the bags come filled with supplies?
No. Our bags are provided empty to allow each agency or caregiver to fill them with items that meet the specific needs of the child.
Do you accept used bags or suitcases?
No. To ensure safety, dignity, and licensing compliance, we only accept new, unused items.
How do I request bags for youth?
You can request bags by completing the form on our website. Just select the items you need and submit your request online.
Can we request bags in bulk for a region or county?
Yes! We welcome bulk requests from counties, DFPS offices, Rainbow Rooms, and other child welfare partners. If your state has proper luggage legislation in place, we may coordinate with state-funded agencies accordingly.
Is there a cost for agencies to receive bags?
In most cases, no. Thanks to our donors, bags are provided at no cost to agencies. In some states, funding is available through legislation or public partnerships.
How is Day 1 Bags funded?
We’re funded entirely through private donations, corporate sponsors, and foundation grants. We do not receive government funding. This allows 100% of public donations to directly support youth in foster care.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. Day 1 Bags is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. You will receive a receipt for tax purposes after your donation.
Can I sponsor a youth in my area?
Absolutely. You can designate your sponsorship or donation to a specific state or region during checkout or when completing a sponsorship form.
